Witches Butter                                                 Tramella mesenterica
 




Description:  Clusters of small orangy globes or brain-like lobes of firm gelatinous substance on log or branch. Color fades in rain.

Season:  All year, especially late winter and spring.

Habitat:  On dead twigs and branches of broad-leaved tree's.

Edibility:  Very bland and mostly water. Could be suitable for soups and sauces.

Comments:  One of the first spring fungi, an alder log across a Mr. Elphie creek covered in Witches Butter is a remarkable find after a long winter. A similar specie but found on coniferous wood is Dacrymyces palmatus. It is a little smaller and different only microscopically.

DETAILS

Fruiting body:  2 - 8 cm across, 3 - 4 cm thick.   Small groups of orange to golden yellow blobs swell during rainfalls.

Spores:  10 - 14  X  7.5 - 9µ  elliptical, smooth, yellowish-white.
